A WORLDWIDE competition for young photographers will result in the winner being in with a chance to win a trip to Canada to have their work exhibited as part of the World Youth Congress in Quebec, on International Youth Day.

The free-to-enter Shoot Nations contest for anyone under the age of 24 opens on May 1st, and the theme of the competition will be ‘YOUNG PEOPLE IN A CHANGING CLIMATE’.

Shoot Nations operates as an online competition, making accessible to young people all over the world. Entrants are encouraged to submit either drawings or photographs relating to their own changing world.

A panel of professional photographers will choose their top shots, which are likely to be exhibited in Quebec on International Youth Day, August 12th.

International children’s charity Plan and photography event organisers Shoot Experience are running the competition, now in its third year, and expect the response this year to be mammoth. With such a strong international focus on global warming, Climate change being the subject of the competition means that it will already be on the tip of everyone’s tongue.

Last year the competition received over 1500 entries from 85 countries. Over 4500 people attended exhibitions of Shoot Nations photographs on 4 different continents.

Project co-ordinator Hamish Mackenzie, from Plan, says: “It’s all about empowering young people to get involved with decision-making and for governments to take their views seriously.

The idea is that the smallest community or family issue in the most remote area of the world can be photographed and displayed at the highest level of global government, the UN.”

Two age group categories will be open for entries, 11-15 years and 16-24 years, from May 1st until July 31st.
